If you are worried about someone else
- Ask directly, and calmly: "Are you thinking about suicide?" Asking does not put the idea in someone's head, and it opens the door to the conversation that matters.
- Listen without judging, and without trying to fix everything at once.
- Help them contact a crisis line — offer to make the call with them, or to stay on the line while they do.
- Do not leave them alone if the risk is immediate.
- Help them get professional support: their doctor, a therapist, an emergency department.
